LATEST NEWS

"Asbestos: The Survey Guide" (HSG 264) was published by HSE on 29 January 2010 (available to order from http://books.hse.gov.uk/hse/public/saleproduct.jsf, or as a free download from http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/hsg264.pdf).  HSG 264 is strong on competence of surveyors and guides Duty Holders to use either a company accredited by UKAS or an ABICS certified surveyor, and we are already aware of Tender documents for surveys being issued that include this wording.

ABICS provides a unique opportunity for individuals with the necessary skills and experience to gain personal recognition as a competent asbestos surveyor.  It is the most economical route for sole traders and small companies.  It is good news too for dutyholders, who can now ask for accreditation or personal certification when commissioning surveyors.

There is a three stage application process:
1.              Portfolio and survey report appraisal - Fee £150
2.              Assessment of practical surveying skills - Fee £350
3.              Panel interview covering building design and survey complexities - Fee £350
All prices exclude VAT.   Certified surveyors are audited annually and required to re-apply every three years.   For an application pack, click on the Documents tab on the left.
ABICS is working to amend its documentation and procedures to encompass the recent HSE guidance, HSG 264 "Asbestos: The Survey Guide" (which replaces MDHS 100).  Candidates must be aware that all assessments made by ABICS on or after 6 April 2010 will be undertaken making reference to the new guidance, rather than the old, although we appreciate that reports completed before the publication of HSG 264 will have been worked against MDHS 100.

ATaC and BOHS are currently running a series of open seminars entitled "Managing Asbestos in Premises: The Survey Guide", aimed at building surveyors, asbestos accredited inspection bodies and clients who want to find out more about the new HSE guidance on asbestos.  The first two in this series (London on 20 January and Leeds 3 February) were fully booked, but places are still available at :

Glasgow - 3 March : see http://www.bohs.org/eventDetails.aspx?event=199 fully booked
Norwich - 18 March : see http://www.bohs.org/eventDetails.aspx?event=200
Cardiff - 19 May : see http://www.bohs.org/eventDetails.aspx?event=201
Birmingham - 16 June see http://www.bohs.org/eventDetails.aspx?event=202

This website is currently being re-developed and we hope to launch the new version as soon as possible.  In addition to the usual public pages, which will, of course, include a list of certified persons and their contact details, we are planning to have a secure area into which applicants can upload their application submissions and make the necessary payments, and a "members" discussion forum where issues can be debated and photographs can be uploaded.  In the meantime, please bear with us and if there's anything that you can't easily find, please let us know by contacting This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
